High Voltage Switching

ICG Training and Consultancy Services High Voltage Switching course, is a nationally recognised training program that focuses on how to safely carry out the duties of a High Voltage Switching Operator in the mining, energy and resources, utilities, and power generation sectors. The course has been designed to cover safety, legislation, high voltage installations and maintenance work while providing you with the experience you need to write switching sheets and perform switching operations

The High Voltage Switching Course provides students with the understanding and experience to safely carry out the duties of a High Voltage Switching Operator and includes training on safety, legislation, permits, switching sheets and performing switching operations.

From the guidance of our highly skilled and experienced trainers, you will learn:

To work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus under a permit system.
To develop switching programs and carry out switching operations on HV field switchgear and substations.
How to carry out test procedures and solve network problems

The course is comprised of 9 units of competency. All unit requirements must be satisfactorily completed to be deemed Competent.

This course is ideal for qualified and licensed electrical workers, technicians and engineers involved with maintaining high voltage electrical equipment who are looking to diversify their skills and job prospects. They will come with extensive knowledge of the industry and leave with practical high voltage switching experience on an electrical network.

Students will be existing workers with some HV experience who seek to gain formal training to allow them to write switching sheets and perform switching operations. Individuals in these roles are expected to possess existing skills and knowledge which can be applied in a range of settings and is determined upon enrolment. These individuals seek to further develop their skills and knowledge across a wide range of mining, energy and resources, utilities, and power generation sectors functions.

Students must:

Have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills (LLN) to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program.
Hold and provide evidence of the relevant prerequisite requirements for each unit of competency prior to enrolment.
Have sufficient work experience in this industry which will be justified by the student’s existing qualification and competency achievements and participating in a pre-enrolment interview.

Students will be required to source their own clothing and footwear appropriate to practical training including rubber soled steel capped boots.

UETDREL005 Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus.
UEECD0019 Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components.
UEECD0044 Solve problems in multiple path circuits.
UEECD0046 Solve problems in single path circuits.
UEECD0051 Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications.
UEEEL0020 Solve problems in low voltage a.c. circuits.
UEEEL0021 Solve problems in magnetic and electromagnetic devices.
UETDREL001 Apply environmental requirements.
UETDREL004 Operate plant and equipment in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus.
UETDRIS018 Perform low voltage field switching operation to a given schedule.
Hold a UET Certificate III Qualification or the equivalent issued in an Australian state or territory, or
Electricians or Electrical Fitters must have completed the unit UETDRIS032 Solve problems in network equipment or equivalent.
A UET Certificate III, IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification or the equivalent issued in an Australian state or territory, or
An Electrician or Electrical Fitter qualification or the equivalent issued in an Australian state or territory, or
In the final stages of completing an apprenticeship in the above qualifications.

This course is delivered as classroom-based activities and practical training and assessment.

The face-to-face classroom-based component of this program sees you undergo formal face-to-face learning and assessment sessions.

The face-face to component includes:

Trainer led theory and demonstration
Group-based hands on activities
Practical skills applications in simulated environments, including:

Preparing to work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus
Carrying out work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus
Determining electricity network voltages
Identifying electricity network assets
Developing and validating HV distribution switching programs
Solving problems in network equipment
Carrying out substation switching
Carrying out switching programs
Carrying out H.V. switchgear operations
Validating H.V. switchgear integrity
Researching, drafting and validating switching programs
Carrying out permit duties
Carrying out HV field switching
Completing workplace required documentation

Full cost of this course is $2200 (GST exempt).

A non-refundable deposit of 20% is payable upon enrolment to secure your place with the balance due before the completion of the course.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal, and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

Credit Transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications.

Students may be required to undertake a pre-enrolment interview and an LLN assessment to determine their suitability for their chosen program and to determine their level of language, literacy and numeracy skills in relation to their chosen program.

Submission of an application for enrolment does not guarantee that a student will be offered a place in their chosen program. ICG Training and Consultancy Services endeavours to ensure suitable candidates are accepted into a learning program where they are most likely to achieve success.

Additional information and documentation may be required to process applications, including:

Verified copies of previously attained competencies for award of Recognition and/or Credit
Unique Student identifier (USI)
